FAQ’s for CBCT and OPG/Lat Ceph

Yes, definitely. The pre-reading materials/lecture handouts including the Radiation safety docs for specific states will be provided 2-4 weeks prior to the course. There is heaps of information and Dr Sholapurkar is sure that you will enjoy the courses. The material would be provided in the form of a link to google drive.

The zoom link will however be provided 2 days prior to the course.



It is the responsibility of the delegate to ensure that they are eligible to apply for a CBCT/OPG/Lat Ceph license within their state where they are practicing. The delegate will not receive a refund if they complete the course but then realize that they were not eligible to hold the respective license. The CBCT/OPG/Lat Ceph licensing courses is open to Dentists, Dental specialists, Oral Health Therapists, Dental Hygienists, and Dental Assistants (with Certificate IV in Dental Assistance Radiography – copy required). Some additional requirements are required in some states and their regulations keep changing from time to time. Please check with your local radiation authority to see the requirements prior to attending this licensing course.

CBCT licensing course

This course is approved by various state Radiation health authorities including VIC, QLD, TAS, NSW and WA. The delegates of these states can apply for the licenses with their respective Radiation health authority by submitting the Certificate of successful completion provided by Dr Sholapurkar. ACT and NT does not endorse such course but usually accepts interstate courses. SA EPA also does not approve such course, but it has an independent assessment administered for the purposes of licensing. This course would be beneficial for the SA delegates who are attending the SA EPA assessments and for those who wish to upgrade their knowledge. To the best of our understanding and various reviews, many SA delegates have attended this course and have cleared the SA EPA exams in the first attempt.

OPG/Lat Ceph licensing course

This course is approved by various state Radiation health authorities including VIC and QLD. The delegates of these states can apply for the licenses with their respective Radiation health authority by submitting the Certificate of successful completion provided by Dr Sholapurkar. NT does not endorse such course but usually accepts interstate courses. SA also does not approve such course as well, but the SA delegates may participate/attend this course if they wish to upgrade their knowledge. 


The course consists of lecture module (please see learning objectives below) followed by demonstration of taking a CBCT scan through a 20 min video presentation directed and produced by Dr Sholapurkar. An open book written theory examination/quiz will follow which the delegates of all the states will have to pass by obtaining at least 50% marks (except the NSW delegates where they need to score at least 75%). The exam paper will consist about 35-40 questions (each carrying 1-3 marks) and 1-2 minutes time would be allotted for each question (the exam would run for approximately 1 hour in total). Dr Sholapurkar will be assessing these exam papers. Upon passing the exam, the delegates will be provided with a signed certificate of competency which they need to submit it to the respective radiation health authority to obtain the license. In addition to this, the delegates will also receive the certificate of attendance where they will be granted 7 CPD points. The examination is for those who wish to obtain their licenses. Delegates who already have their licenses can still appear for the course (to upgrade their knowledge) and obtain the CPD points.


If you fail the exam, you need to re-do the exams and you will be charged a fee of AU$150 PLUS GST. The day and timing for re-doing the exams will be discussed and will be conducted at a time that suits both the delegate and Dr Sholapurkar.

Learning objectives:


Yes the exams are held on the same day and it is an open book exam. It is mandatory to sit for the exams on the same day.


Definitely, it is mandatory to sit for the assesment/exams. If you dont, then you will not get your certificate of competency and you cant apply for the license.


If you don’t have both the licenses, then we would recommended that you take both the courses as it is held on the same day. This will also avoid you to attend the other course on a separate day in the future. Moreover, most dental practices in Australia are now buying both OPG/Lat Ceph and CBCT machines and in order to operate them you would definitely need a license. If you take both OPG and CBCT licensing course, then you can apply for these two licenses together and you will get it in one go. This is how most people do.


Refresher course (It could be OPG/Lat Ceph and/or CBCT licensing course) is for those who already have a license and they want to refresh their knowledge. These delegates need not have to attend the exam as they already have their licenses.


Once you have passed the exam, you will get the Certificate of competency signed by Dr Sholapurkar. You will then apply for the license by going into the respective Radiation health department website, filling up the application form, uploding the certificate of competency (we believe, you should get it certified from a JP/commissioner of declaration/notary public and then upload it) and other basic documents (look into the application form and it is clearly mentioned) like AHPRA registration certificate, driver’s license, Passport etc etc. We believe that these documents also need to be certified by a JP. Please double check. Please note that some Radiation health departments have different rules and therefore it is wise to confirm these from them and then apply for the license. Once you submit the application form with supporting documents, the Radiation health department will issue you with the license.


These courses are just a lifetime courses and to be done just once. But you need to keep renewing the license (best to renew it every 3 years) similar to as you renew your driver’s license. You will have options to renew for 1, 2 or 3 years in most Radiation health departments.


Good question. In the Certificate of competency you may see at the bottom that the certificate is valid for 1 year. This meant that you need to apply for your CBCT/OPG/Lat Ceph license within 1 year. If you fail to apply for license within that time frame, then Dr Sholapurkar is legally not allowed to extend the validity of the certificate and you need to attend the course again. Some delegates were also confused about the term validity/expiry and therefore please note that the 1 year validity/expiry of the certificate doesnt mean that you need to again attend the course after 1 year time. This is a life time course which needs to be attended only once.

Yes, you need to do DEN 5 separately. This is mandatory for Victoria state delegates. This is an industry certification/course from the CBCT manufacturer/distributor (DEN5). Qld doesn’t need DEN 5. Similarly please check with your state Radiation health authority (in the state where your principal place of practice is) about DEN 5 course. Please note that DEN 5 is only for CBCT and it is not for OPG. Getting a DEN 5 training certificate is easy. DEN 5 course is being provided by various CBCT machine manufacturing companies or providers say Dentsply Sirona, Body logic resourses, Carestream dental etc. You can contact these companies and see what they say.

Sorry, we dont have a recorded version. Dr Sholapurkar prefers to do it online via Zoom every time as he wants to keep it more interactive and this will work out very efficiently.


This is a very good but also a tricky question. We have 4 answers for this question. First and foremost, please ask this question to your respective Radiation health authority. Some may agree and some may not. First, you can provide us with your evidence of ADC certificate. We assume that you will definitely get your AHPRA registration upon application. Say you provide us with your ADC certificate and you have applied for AHPRA registration today, it will atleast take 6-8 weeks for you to get the AHPRA registration. After that, you can apply for the OPG and CBCT license. Evidence of having an AHPRA registration is pre-requisite for obtaining the license. You need to tick the box in the application form and upload the AHPRA registration certificate (certified copy I believe). This is a way to think efficiently, where meantime, you can also attend the DEN 5 course elsewhere and get ready with the certificates. By the time you receive your AHPRA registration, you can apply for the license and get it done quickly. Working out this way would be efficient without wasting your time.

Secondly, it is at your risk that you are attending these courses before you have your AHPRA registration in your hand., The reason being – for example if you do not receive (for some reasons) your AHPRA registration (this will most probably not happen), then you cannot apply for the license as you are not a registered dentist.

Thirdly, a disadvantage of attending these courses before you have your AHPRA registration is that you will not be able to claim those CPD points. The reason being that the CPD points are being considered from the 1st day of registration. Here you need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages – If you are happy to do the courses and not bother about claiming the CPD points then the decision is left up to you.

Finally, if you would like to wait until you receive your registration and then attend the course, then even that is fine. Your decision is completely based on your circumstances and your wish.


OPG + Lat Ceph Course Schedule is as below

8:30-11:00 am:
OPG + Lat Ceph Part 1 – Basic lectures will be covered here. These basic lectures are common for both OPG and CBCT course. Both the OPG and CBCT delegates attend these basic lectures. It doesn’t make any sense to repeat these lectures again in the afternoon. Isn’t it?
3:00 – 5:30 pm:
OPG + Lat Ceph 2
5.30 – 6.30 pm: Assessment Quiz (Mandatory) – This will be an open book exam.


You cant just take CBCT as some radiation health departments may (not sure) ask about your OPG license first and then the CBCT license will be added to your existing OPG license. If you take both OPG and CBCT licensing course, then you can apply for these two licenses together and you will get it in one go. This is how most people do.

FAQ’s for the 2D Radiography Interpretation course

This is a highly interactive course right from the beginning of the presentation. Dr Sholapurkar has incorporated innumerable radiographs (more than 200) in the presentation and each case he presents has a take home message. Dental radiographs have been a valuable diagnostic tool in the dentist’s armamentarium and are commonly being used in various dental practices across Australia. A successful and systematic approach to radiographic interpretation depends on thorough understanding of normal radiographic anatomy of the head and neck. Dental practitioners should also be aware of all the pathologies and especially those associated with systemic illnesses so that they can timely refer the patients to the respective specialists. This presentation highlights variety of oral and dental pathologies (which are illustrated by classic examples and are exclusively Radiology related) that general dental practitioners usually encounter. There are few brain teasing cases which resembled a wide variety of conditions that led to misdiagnosis both on clinical and radiological examination but turned out completely different on histopathological examination. The lecture will also outline the basic steps the clinicians must consider to continually refine their diagnostic skills and knowledge of anatomy in order to formulate a differential diagnosis. At the end of 4 hour interactive lecture, we will have an hour discussion/two way conversation between the presenter and the delegates.
